183. 12/31/18 Happy New Year!

Week 183  12/31/18

No photos to show but we went to a very fun New Year's Eve party at John and Katherine's. The food was great, lots of friends showed up and we turned the large entry space into a dance floor as we all danced to old (rock, blues and motown) music. Videos exist but I'm not sharing!

182. Nice day for a stroll

Week 182  12/26/18

Julia and John stayed for a couple of days after Christmas. We all wanted to be outside the day after Christmas so we went for a walk on the rail trail with Dick and Sandy too.

181. Family home for Christmas

Week 181  12/23/18

We were lucky to have Julia, John, Ben, Gillian and Sherry staying with us at the house for Christmas.

The four 30-somethings made plans for visiting in the spring.

We spent Christmas Eve and morning at Winthrop Street. Each person read a limerick for another person and Jeff's was musical this year.

We spent the after noon at Sandy and Dick's house.

180. Revels

Week 180  12/15/18

Christmas Revels

We have heard about Christmas Revels for years but this is the first time we've actually attended. Deborah and Vincent go each year with their granddaughter and by coincidence we were there for the same show. Our friend Dennis is in the cast and he did a great job.

Here is the interior of Sanders Theater. Our view from the top balcony was partially blocked by the railing but that didn't block our enjoyment of the performance. Great singing, playing and dancing.

179. Easy night out.

Week 179  12/8/18

This one is a bit of a cheat but we make the rules so what of it! We had a bit of a busy week with schedule projects and so forth but managed to eke out a sort-of adventure by going to Craft Roots for music and a beer on Saturday night.

178. Diamond HIll

Week 178  11/28/18

We visited a nice little vineyard in Cumberland, Rhode Island. We took a tasting and particularly liked their fruit wines so we bought a few bottles.

We were greeted by two friendly creatures as we parked our car.

The house was built in 1780, same year as our house. This one has been revised quite a bit, including a flat roof on the main house. Odd choice!

177. Twofer - Excitement and nice walk

Week 177

11/23/18 A potentially dangerous adventure

Medway has a tradition for the Saturday after Thanksgiving of a Christmas parade followed by fireworks. We decided to skip the parade and speeches this year but at the last minute headed to see the fireworks. Parking lots were full and street parking was backed far up the street so we walked. There is a trail from the High School of about a mile and a half to the park that is mostly through the woods. It was night and we had no flashlight so we used a phone to show us where the puddles were.

When we got to the park, the trail was blocked by caution tape. We figured it was just there to block off a large wet area in a field. (It's been a bit floody this season.) so we bypassed the tape and tried to get around the big wet area with no success. There was a narrow board spanning it and I knew I couldn't make it with my questionable balance so we waited there. A few families with small children also came out of the woods. I heard them talking to a cop who appeared. He told them that the caution tape was keeping people away from where the fireworks were being detonated and that they should quickly get across the wet area. Oh. When he saw us, it was too late, and I wasn't going across the board anyway, so we went back the way we came to the other side of the caution tape. He stayed on the fireworks side. We watched from very close with the fireworks straight overhead and dropping burning debris all around us. It wasn't likely to set any of the wet trees and ground on fire but I'm glad it didn't land on us.

11/24/18 New (to us) stretch of the Rail Trail

After the adventure of last night, we went on a calmer one the next day. There is a stretch of Rail Trail in Milford that we hadn't walked yet.

Paul worked in Milford so new many of these people.

176. Thanks to Veterans

Week 176  11/11/18

175. Cool park renovations

Week 175  11/9/18

Medway has invested in lots of infrastructure improvements and also some lifestyle improvements. We looked at two parks that have had major renovations.

The Oakland Street park has a relocated parking lot, a new pavilion, rest rooms, concession stand and a new playground. Also there is a connection with the adjacent Senior Center.

Choate Park has been completely redone with new pathways, a huge playground including a splash pad, a large pavilion and new parking lot.

174. A family visit

Week 174  11/2/18

We took a drive to Baltimore for the weekend to see Ben and Gillian. They always have lots of ideas for things to do and great food.

We all wanted to go to the National Aquarium so we made a day of it.

This is Calypso, Gillian's favorite animal. She is missing a limb.

A visit with Ben often includes pie at some point. We picked these amazing apples at an orchard.

Here we are checking out the farm stand merchandise at the orchard after picking.

Paul and I took some very special photos to announce the newest member of the family, due in late April.

173. A true adventure

Week 173  10/24/18

This is a "real" adventure because I purchased a smart phone app-game called Big City Adventure. He could choose from multiple cities and decided on Providence. We had a great time learning more about the city and doing the scavenger hunt type of activities. We even found a friend of mine who now is director of the Brown library and happened to be in the main library space when the adventure took us there.

170. Wauwinet, Nantucket (Part 2)

Week 170  9/30/18 - 10/6/18

Here are some photos taken near our cottage. This is a view from our porch toward the Wauwinet Inn. We ate dinner there one night and watched the Patriots game.

I think these birds are plovers.

Andy and I sometimes watched Paul and Charlie fish from the beach on the ocean side. We read, did crossword puzzles, drew and knit.

This stairway is right behind the cottage. You can see the roof behind. I like to sit at the top of the steps and eat my cereal first thing in the morning.

We bought a special pass to allow Charlie's 4-wheel-drive truck in the Coscata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge just north of where we stayed. He needed to deflate his tires too.

Fishing was great everywhere, including the wildlife refuge, but seals kept almost everyone from getting the fish. Seals (mostly gray seals but also harbor seals) waited in the surf near each person fishing and usually grabbed the fish off the line. Apparently sometimes they chase fish onto the shore if someone manages to get it that far. The seals can move fast and weigh up to 750 pounds so they always win.

Paul and I rode in the bed of the truck on the way to the refuge.

I chatted with a young couple about wanting to see a seal when it was resting on shore. After we parted, I looked back to see the man proposing marriage to the woman on one knee.  Awwww.

This is my best shot of a seal. We saw many, and also some ocean sunfish which are very large and have a flipper that looks like a shark fin.

I brought along supplies for needle felting and Andy loved doing this.

Charlie also made a mug mat.
