104. Becoming a tradition

Week 104  6/28/17

Steve and Pattie came for a nice long visit at the end of their New England and the Maritimes tour to mark Pattie's retirement from Baylor.  We had a chance to check out Medway's newest offerings, visit with Wellesley friends and go back to the North End restaurant we ate at together last summer.

Here is a nice green space at the edge of the Charles River on the property of the old mill condos where Pattie and Steve lived. Steve walked down to the water where Ivy used to sit and read on a rock.

North End and Boston Market wandering.

Dinner with Wellesley gang and spouses was full of stories.

103. Annual Big Chill

Week 103  6/18/17

Since 2012, some of my college friends have met for a weekend each year. Past convergences have been in Austin, Dorset Vermont, Randolph NH, Seattle (twice) and this year in Boothbay Harbor Maine. It's the first time we've met at a place where none of us live. Spruce Point Inn was the destination. We rented two "town houses" and one single room to accommodate the whole crowd.

Paul and Charlie wanted a river fishing trip first, so they drove up a little late. Looks like Charlie caught a big one.

Joe and Pam brought a chess-drinking game that they found at a yard sale. They set it up with red and white wine but the game kind of fizzled out because someone took a move that was illegal and nobody knew who it was or how far back it was done.  I wasn't really paying attention.

We took a ride into town to look at the boats and the shops. One day we went to a lobster/clam shack.

This is the signature style of chair at the hotel. It was more comfortable than it looks. I like the oversized armrests that are parallel to the ground for resting snacks and drinks.

The weather was not the best on our weekend. People who wanted to kayak were mostly discouraged by rain and high winds. But all were anxious to see the renowned Botanic Garden. Here are Andy, Sherry, Charlie and Paul S.

I was interested in the black petunias.

We all liked this picture of Liz.

Several of our group borrowed bikes from the inn.

The inn property included a very attractive series of hiking trails. I liked this new growth.

102. Not quite the beach.

Week 102  6/12/17

Julia and John wanted an ocean day before they headed back home to the desert. We decided to go with the Golebiewskis to New England Aquarium, rather than a beach. Heading to the airport at the end of the day should be fairly straightforward from here.

One of the giant sea tortoises swimming away in the ocean tank.

If you look closely, you can see the eyes of one of these fish above the waterline.

Julia touched the rays.

The airplane flight was delayed a few times, so we had time to spare. We had an appetizer at Legal Seafood, then went back later for dinner. Here were are people-watching near Boston Harbor at the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

We walked through Quincy Market.

Everyone went into Faneuil Hall to see the historical displays. Most got a treat too.

101. Getting ready for a very special day!

Week 101  6/9/17

Tomorrow Ben and Gillian will be married. Preparations actually started months ago. One of my contributions was cutting and hemming this gingham for tablecloths. I finished early this week and ironed them yesterday.

Ben and Gillian planted these succulents a month before the wedding and left them to root on our porch. Ben made 80 tiny planters. The succulents will decorate the tables and can be taken home by guests.

Today, Gillian and Julia put together  bouquets for the bride, bridesmaids and Julia (the groomswoman). Sherry helped keep track of things and went with me on errands for extra flowers and food.

The reception tent was erected behind the blueberry bushes. Glassware, dishes, tableware and cloth napkins etc. were delivered.

Phil, Mike and Ernestine set up the "photo booth."

A female snapping turtle visited after laying her eggs near the caterer's canopy.

Ben cut down saplings and lashed them together to create a chuppah for the ceremony. Those Boy Scout skills came in handy today. John and Sherry helped him figure it out.

Decorator-in-chief Julia hung vases at the back of the chuppah as Paul, Gillian, Evan, Rhea and Heather looked on to check that they were hung evenly.

Emily puts the finishing touches on the chuppah.

Testing....

The women in the wedding party were treated to a manicure/pedicure party by Gillian. Besides the grooming, we had champagne, candy and strawberries! Sandy is happy!
