Adventure number 81 took us to the site of Medfield State Hospital. Today we have joined a guided tour, led by John Thompson. He was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the site and an experienced public speaker. He touched on architecure, 18th century culture, psychiatry and disorders, the town of Medfield in history, the environment and land use. Also, films about the hospital and others being filmed on the site (X-Men currently), the physical plant, landscaping, geology (he is trained as a geologist), options for using the buildings and what renovations would be needed. He's talked with doctors who practiced here, ex-patients, families of patients and staff who worked here. He gives several types of tours throughout the year, focusing on architecture, medicine and patient care or the land. No wonder his talks are so well attended!
We were allowed to enter the chapel. It has a lot of potential as a community space and a group is forming to see about having it used for performances.
This is one of the buildings seen in the film "Shutter Island."
