This is a bit different. Paul volunteered to teach the surveying merit badge to Boy Scouts at Camp Squanto during this school vacation week. It's been a while since he's done this sort of thing so I helped him prepare by playing the part of the scout and letting him teach me.
We started by discussing how surveying fits into the building trades, how it uses science, technology, engineering and math, safety considerations and so forth.
I learned a lot, actually. I think Paul learned a lot from me about the kinds of mistakes that newbys can make. We measured and turned 5 angles around the blueberry bushes.
The last step is the calculation part. I wondered how the boys would do with the trigonometry, since some will be middle school age.
Paul did well and the boys completed the project. Some were a bit young, and there were more boys than he expected - 13. Also he had no assistant. I think it's quite an accomplishment.
