Week 137 2/14/18
The Davis Museum has some interesting exhibits now.
First we looked at Resist, a collection of activist art. There are examples I remember from the 60's, some earlier and some from the present day.
The exhibit I particularly wanted to see was the quilts made by Siddi women (women from Africa, brought by Portuguese merchants to the west coast of India between the 16th and 19th centuries who later escaped bondage).
The quilts are made from pieces of used clothing and other textiles hand stitched in decorative patterns. They are backed with saris and all have the distinctive white running stitch used to quilt the layers together.
Each quilt has a patch of fabric in the corners, called phula. The purpose and origin isn't known, other than that the word means flower. The quilt creators say that the quilt is not finished without the phula.
