137. Davis Museum

Week 137  2/14/18

The Davis Museum has some interesting exhibits now.

First we looked at Resist, a collection of activist art. There are examples I remember from the 60's, some earlier and some from the present day.

The exhibit I particularly wanted to see was the quilts made by Siddi women (women from Africa, brought by Portuguese merchants to the west coast of India between the 16th and 19th centuries who later escaped bondage).

The quilts are made from pieces of used clothing and other textiles hand stitched in decorative patterns. They are backed with saris and all have the distinctive white running stitch used to quilt the layers together.

Each quilt has a patch of fabric in the corners, called phula. The purpose and origin isn't known, other than that the word means flower. The quilt creators say that the quilt is not finished without the phula.

136. Some serious planning going on

Week 136  2/5/18

Oops, we forgot to take many pictures. I guess we were having too much fun visiting Andy and Charlie in Auburn Maine. Some of us went snow shoeing down a long trail across the street adjacent to their orchard and then beyond. The first night, Charlie and Paul stayed home and ate a swordfish meal near the wood stove and discussed a future fishing trip on a par with the Belize trip in 2017. We all did some research on a trip which will probably be in 2019 with a smaller one later this year.

While the guys did their thing, Andy and I celebrated the 93rd birthday of her mother, Josie at the assisted living place nearby.

Our cats now get visits by a professional when we go away, because Teeticket needs insulin. They like the pet sitter but Maizie was glad when we got home. Maybe here she is trying to keep us from going again.
